A notorious criminal who lived inside a toy store becomes an unlikely romantic lead.
In short: Jeffrey Manchester, a U.S. Army veteran turned serial robber, earned the nickname Roofman by drilling into McDonald's locations. After escaping prison, he hid inside a Toys "R" Us, where he began a complicated double life. The 2025 film Roofman explores this bizarre true story of crime, romance, and redemption.
Directed by Derek Cianfrance and starring Channing Tatum, the 2025 film Roofman dramatizes the life of Jeffrey Manchester. In 1998, the divorced veteran began a string of over 40 robberies targeting McDonald's restaurants. Utilizing his military training, he exploited routine patterns to break in through roofs at night. His criminal career ended after he was arrested at his daughter's birthday party and sentenced to 45 years in prison.
Following a daring prison escape, Manchester sought refuge inside a Toys "R" Us store. He lived behind bike shelves, subsisting on candy while observing employees. During this time, he met Leigh Wainscott, a single mother working at the store. Manchester eventually assumed the alias John Zorn, integrated himself into Leigh's life, and began acting as a father figure to her two daughters. This fragile domesticity collapsed when he robbed the same toy store at gunpoint to fund a new identity, leading to his capture and an additional 32-year sentence.
The film, which grossed $34 million worldwide, blends crime thriller elements with a character study of a man torn between his criminal impulses and a desire for family. Cianfrance incorporates real-world elements, including cameos from the actual people involved in the case, such as Leigh Moore and arresting officer Katherine Scheimreif. While the narrative is based on Manchester's life, the film highlights his ongoing struggle for normalcy, noting that he has attempted to escape prison twice since his final incarceration.
Critics have largely praised the film, with 87% of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes being positive. The project, which began filming in Gastonia, North Carolina, in October 2024, is noted for its tonal shift for the director. By focusing on Manchester's humanity rather than just his crimes, the film invites viewers to consider the complex motivations of a man who spent his life oscillating between the shadows of a roof and the light of a family home.
