When teenagers discover their parents are supervillains, the fight for survival begins in earnest.
In short: Marvel's Runaways follows six diverse adolescents who unite after uncovering their parents' secret criminal organization, the Pride. As they flee their homes, these young heroes must navigate newfound powers and complex family betrayals, ultimately facing off against ancient alien threats and dark sorcery in a high-stakes battle for their future.
Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage for Hulu, the series adapts the Marvel Comics superhero team into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The narrative centers on six teenagers—Alex, Nico, Karolina, Gert, Chase, and Molly—who realize their parents are members of the Pride, a clandestine group of villains. While the source material serves as a foundation, the showrunners intentionally evolved the characters. For instance, Nico Minoru’s method of summoning the Staff of One was altered to avoid depicting self-harm, a choice made to protect the show's younger audience while maintaining the core visual of drawing blood.
The series distinguishes itself through its character-driven approach to the superhero genre. Chase Stein, for example, is portrayed with more depth than his comic book counterpart, shifting from a stereotypical jock to a brilliant engineer who crafts his own weaponized gauntlets. Similarly, the parents are not one-dimensional antagonists. Actors like James Marsters, who plays Victor Stein, sought to portray the complexities of parenthood, emphasizing that his character’s harshness stems from a desire for his son to reach his full potential rather than simple malice.
Production of the series faced several shifts, beginning with a shelved film project in 2013 before Hulu ordered a pilot in 2016. Across three seasons released between 2017 and 2019, the scope expanded from domestic conflict to cosmic stakes, including a crossover with Cloak & Dagger and the introduction of Morgan le Fay. Despite its critical run, the show was pulled from Hulu in May 2023 due to corporate financial restructuring, eventually finding new homes on the CW's streaming platform and Tubi in subsequent years.
