In short: In the world of The Boys, superpowered individuals known as "Supes" are not just heroes; they are assets for Vought International. This powerful corporation markets and monetizes these individuals, many of whom are selfish and corrupt behind their public personas, turning the superhero genre into a biting satirical black comedy.

The franchise began as a comic book series created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. Initially released via DC Comics' Wildstorm imprint between October 2006 and January 2007, the series later transitioned to Dynamite Entertainment, which published it from February 2007 through November 2012. The television adaptation, developed by Eric Kripke, has expanded the universe through various spin-offs and an animated anthology series. The original comic run was eventually succeeded by an eight-issue epilogue titled Dear Becky. Additionally, the entire comic series has been adapted into seven audiobooks by GraphicAudio.

The television series follows a team of vigilantes fighting against superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities. Central to the conflict is Vought International, a corporation that secretly creates Supes. The narrative explores themes such as white supremacy and systemic racism, particularly through the character Stormfront, who was gender-swapped for the show to serve as a foil to the leader of the Seven, Homelander. The show's second season was released between September and October 2020. It also explores the concept of xenophobia through its narrative.

The franchise has grown into a vast 'Vought Cinematic Universe' (VCU). This includes the main series, the animated anthology The Boys Presents: Diabolical, and the spin-off Gen V, which focuses on Godolkin University. Future expansions include the prequel Vought Rising and a series set in Mexico titled The Boys: Mexico, starring Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal. The spin-off Gen V was released in 2023. This series is centred on the corruption at Godolkin University.
