In short: Brendan Reilly, a fugitive British financier hiding in Macau, lives a life of opulent deception. As his debts mount and his reality fractures, he encounters a mysterious woman who leads him into a supernatural cycle of fortune and loss. Is his improbable winning streak a miracle, or a haunting?

Directed by Edward Berger and based on Lawrence Osborne’s 2014 novel, Ballad of a Small Player follows Brendan Reilly, a man who has fled financial crimes in the United Kingdom to reinvent himself as an aristocrat in Macau. Played by Colin Farrell, Reilly is an inveterate gambler who relies on his persona to maintain a lifestyle of luxury hotels and high-stakes baccarat. However, his facade begins to crumble when he is tracked by a British investigator, Cynthia Blithe, who demands repayment of his embezzled funds under threat of deportation.

The narrative takes a surreal turn when Reilly meets Dao Ming, an enigmatic credit broker who introduces him to the traditions of the Ghost Festival. After a health crisis, Reilly discovers a hidden cache of money in a shed belonging to Dao, which fuels an extraordinary winning streak at the casinos. Yet, this success proves to be his undoing; he is banned from Macau’s gambling establishments and begins to fear he has transformed into a 'hungry ghost.' The revelation that his interactions with Dao were hallucinations—and that she had actually drowned on the festival's first night—forces a reckoning.

Released in 2025, the film received mixed critical reception, with Metacritic assigning it a score of 46 out of 100. Critics praised Farrell’s committed performance but noted that the film’s opulent visual style occasionally struggled to balance its narrative excess. Ultimately, Reilly’s journey concludes with him abandoning his wealth as a spiritual offering, leaving him haunted by the memory of Dao. The film, which features a supporting cast including Tilda Swinton and Fala Chen, serves as a dark, psychological exploration of guilt, obsession, and the thin line between reality and delusion in the high-pressure world of international gambling.
