The mathematician who became a Hollywood icon of eccentricity
In short: Before he was a celebrated character actor known for intelligent, eccentric roles, Sam Jaffe was a graduate student of engineering and a mathematics dean. His journey from the Yiddish theater of New York to the heights of Hollywood stardom reveals a life of profound intellectual versatility.
Born in 1891 to Ukrainian Jewish parents in New York City, Sam Jaffe's early life was rooted in the arts and academia. His mother was a Yiddish actress in Odesa, and Jaffe began performing with her in Yiddish theater productions as a child. Despite this artistic lineage, Jaffe pursued a rigorous academic path, graduating from City College of New York with a degree in engineering in 1912 before attending Columbia University for graduate studies.
Jaffe's professional life was equally diverse. Before returning to acting in 1915, he served as a teacher and eventually the dean of mathematics at the Bronx Cultural Institute. His transition to the mainstream stage saw him appear in the notorious 1923 Broadway premiere of God of Vengeance, which resulted in indecency charges for the cast and producers. He later secured a role in the original production of The Jazz Singer in 1925.
Jaffe's film career reached its zenith in the mid-20th century. He gained prominence in 1938 at age 47 for his role in Gunga Din and won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor in 1950 for his performance in The Asphalt Jungle. Despite being blacklisted during the 1950s as a suspected communist sympathizer, he continued to work, notably appearing in Ben-Hur in 1959. He remained a versatile presence in media until his death in 1984, appearing in television series like Ben Casey and guest roles in Batman.
Jaffe's personal life was marked by deep connections to the cultural elite, including friendships with Igor Stravinsky and Ray Bradbury. He was married twice: first to operatic soprano Lillian Taiz, and later to actress Bettye Ackerman, with whom he co-starred on television. His legacy is one of a multi-hyphenate who navigated the complexities of academia, politics, and the high-stakes world of Hollywood.
