Why this germophobic squirrel is a far cry from his literary counterpart
In short: Scaredy Squirrel is an energetic, germ-fearing orange squirrel living in Balsa City. While the television series draws inspiration from the books by Mélanie Watt, the adaptation makes significant changes, including transforming the protagonist from a flying squirrel into an American red squirrel. His daily life is anything but quiet.
The animated comedy series, which first aired on YTV in April 2011, centers on the life of Scaredy Orville Squirrel. Unlike the original literary character, this version is a fastidious employee at a local grocery store called Stash N Hoard. He shares his world with a colorful cast of characters, including his best friend Dave, a messy and dimwitted blue skunk, and his boss Nestor, a yellow canary who manages the store alongside his demanding mother, Momma.
The show’s production was a collaborative Canadian effort, involving animation studio Nelvana and various facilities like Pipeline Studios and Studio 306. Financial backing for the project arrived through national media funds and specific film production tax credits. Development of the series began in the spring of 2008, eventually leading to a three-season run that concluded in August 2013. Despite its international reach, airing across Europe, Latin America, and North America, the series has never seen an official home media release on DVD.
The narrative often revolves around the eccentricities of Balsa City residents. From a secret-agent toad named Mildred to an egotistical ferret named Paddy, the show leans into absurd humor. Even romantic interests are subverted; Scaredy develops a crush on a character named Sue, only to realize she is insane. While the show enjoyed enough success to secure multiple renewals, it remains a unique artifact of Canadian animation that departed significantly from the source material's tone and character design.
