Did Mystery Inc. finally encounter a real cryptid in the Scottish Highlands?
In short: In their 2004 adventure, the gang investigates a terrorized castle near Loch Ness. While they uncover a complex web of human-made mechanical deceptions, a final, chilling discovery suggests that some legends might hold a grain of truth. It is a rare moment where the mystery remains partially unsolved.
Released in June 2004, Scooby-Doo! and the Loch Ness Monster marked the seventh direct-to-video entry for the franchise. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the film departed from the classic 1969 aesthetic, featuring the Mystery Inc. crew in their modern attire from the What's New, Scooby-Doo? series. The story follows Daphne Blake and her friends to Scotland, where they visit her cousin Shannon at Blake Castle during the Highland games.
The plot centers on a series of attacks by a supposed monster, which the gang eventually exposes as a hoax. Professor Fiona Pembrooke, desperate to prove the creature's existence to her rival Sir Ian Locksley, orchestrated the chaos using a submarine and a large puppet operated by the Haggart brothers. Despite these elaborate fakes, the film concludes with a twist: a camera captures footage of a creature at depths far beyond the reach of Pembrooke’s technology. As the gang departs, Scooby-Doo catches a glimpse of something swimming in the water, leaving the reality of the monster ambiguous.
The production is notable for its voice cast, including Mindy Cohn as Velma and Sheena Easton as Pembrooke. It received recognition for its quality, earning a nomination for a 2004 Annie Award in the home entertainment category. Critics have praised the film for its sympathetic antagonist and memorable soundtrack, which includes tracks by Phish and the Young Dubliners. Beyond the screen, the story was adapted into a novelization by author Suzanne Weyn, further cementing its place in the broader Scooby-Doo canon.
