The Wayans family returns to the franchise that made them famous with a meta-parody
In short: Twenty-five years after the original, the Wayans siblings have reunited for Scary Movie 6. This rebootquel brings back legacy characters to face a new masked killer, while simultaneously mocking the modern horror landscape. Despite critical panning, the film proved a massive commercial success, securing the highest opening weekend in the series.
The 2026 release of Scary Movie marks a significant homecoming for the Wayans family. Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans departed the franchise following the 2001 sequel due to creative and financial disputes with Miramax. Their return was facilitated by the downfall of producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein and the encouragement of their late father, Howell Stouten Wayans. The project, produced under the Ugly Baby Productions label, was greenlit after Jonathan Glickman became CEO of Miramax, providing a $30 million budget.
The film functions as a self-aware 'rebootquel,' a term used by characters within the plot to describe the trend of blending legacy stars with new blood. The narrative follows original characters Cindy Campbell, Brenda Meeks, Shorty, and Ray Wilkins as they confront a new Ghostface killer. The cast features returning stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall alongside newcomers like Olivia Rose Keegan and Savannah Lee Nassif. The plot is packed with parodies of recent horror hits, including Get Out, Longlegs, Sinners, and the Scream franchise, while also incorporating references to animated features like KPop Demon Hunters.
Commercially, the film was a triumph, grossing $231.9 million worldwide and setting a franchise record with a $54.3 million opening weekend. However, the critical reception was largely negative. Reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 23% approval rating, with many critics arguing that the gags felt dated or lazy. While some reviewers praised the twist ending and the chemistry between the original cast members, others felt the film lacked the sharp inspiration needed to elevate its meta-commentary beyond a simple retread of earlier successes.
The production process was marked by rapid development, with principal photography occurring between October and November 2025 at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Additional filming took place in April 2026 to incorporate more recent horror parodies. Following its theatrical run, the film was released on digital platforms with an extended version, including 13 minutes of previously unseen footage, highlighting the studio's attempt to capitalize on the film's strong box office performance.
