In short: Scary Movie 5 arrived seven years after its predecessor, yet it failed to capture the magic of the original series. Abandoned by its lead stars and panned by critics, the film became a cautionary tale of franchise fatigue, ultimately earning a scathing review from its own director.

Released in April 2013, the fifth entry in the parody franchise was helmed by director Malcolm D. Lee, with David Zucker and Pat Proft handling the script. Unlike previous installments, the production lacked the presence of franchise staples Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Instead, the cast featured Ashley Tisdale, Simon Rex, and cameos from figures like Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. The film attempted to lampoon various horror and thriller titles, including Mama, Sinister, and Inception, but struggled to find a comedic voice that resonated with audiences or reviewers.

The reception was overwhelmingly negative. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 4% approval rating, while Metacritic assigned it a score of 11 out of 100. Reviewers described the experience as an "anti-laugh machine" that relied on tiresome pop culture references rather than genuine wit. The film's own director, Malcolm D. Lee, later publicly advised audiences to avoid watching it entirely, stating it was not a good use of their time. The project also faced recognition at the Golden Raspberry Awards, receiving nominations for worst sequel and worst screen combinations.

Commercially, the film underperformed, grossing $78.4 million worldwide. Its opening weekend in North America brought in $14.2 million, the lowest debut for any film in the series. Despite the inclusion of unrated cuts and a soundtrack composed by James L. Venable, the film could not sustain momentum, falling out of the top ten box office rankings by its fourth weekend. The franchise eventually moved toward a different direction, with a 2026 release reuniting the original creative team and stars to serve as a spiritual successor to the earlier films.
