In short: Created by Dan and Eugene Levy, Schitt's Creek follows a wealthy family forced into a run-down motel after losing their fortune. Initially a niche Canadian sitcom, the series exploded in popularity through a Netflix-fueled surge, eventually sweeping every major comedy category at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards.

The concept for Schitt's Creek emerged when Dan Levy wondered how reality television families would cope if they lost their wealth. His father, Eugene, helped develop the premise, which was inspired by actress Kim Basinger’s 1989 purchase of a Georgia town. The Levys chose the name after Eugene’s wife remarked that a family losing their money and moving in with their kids would be 'up sh–'s creek.' To convince skeptical network executives that the title was legitimate, the creators brought in phone book pages listing real people with the surname 'Schitt.'

Production began in 2014 after the CBC and Pop TV sought more serialized, scripted content. The show was filmed using a single-camera setup without a laugh track, utilizing various locations across Ontario, including Goodwood, which became a tourist destination. Casting was a deliberate process; Catherine O'Hara was the creators' first choice for Moira Rose, while Annie Murphy was cast as Alexis after a second audition for a different role convinced the producers she could play the part.

The series gained momentum after its third season, largely due to its presence on Netflix. By its sixth and final season, it made history by receiving 15 Emmy nominations, setting a record for a final season. At the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, it became the first series to sweep all seven major comedy categories, including wins for writing, directing, and all four acting awards. This success solidified its legacy as a critical darling that transformed from a small-scale project into a global cultural touchstone.
