How a 1999 cult classic film was reimagined for a short-lived television sitcom
In short: In 2009, ABC Family launched a single-camera sitcom based on the beloved 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You. Despite earning critical praise for its clever dialogue and a record-breaking premiere, the series struggled to maintain momentum, ultimately being canceled after producing only 20 episodes across two seasons.
Developed by showrunner Carter Covington, the series aimed to capture the spirit of a John Hughes film on a weekly basis. The production maintained strong ties to its cinematic predecessor, bringing back director Gil Junger, who helmed the original movie, to direct 12 of the show's 20 episodes. Composer Richard Gibbs, responsible for the film's original score, returned to create the series' theme music, while actor Larry Miller reprised his role as the overprotective father, Dr. Walter Stratford.
The show followed sisters Kat and Bianca Stratford as they navigated the social hierarchies of Padua High. Lindsey Shaw starred as the confrontational Kat, while Meaghan Martin played the social-climbing Bianca. The production faced practical challenges early on; while the pilot was filmed at a high school in Tujunga, California, budget constraints forced the remainder of the series to move to a soundstage in Santa Clarita, with only occasional exterior shots filmed on location.
Critical reception was generally positive, with the series holding an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers frequently highlighted the strength of the lead performances and the show's genuine appeal. Despite being named one of the best shows of 2009 by The New York Times, the sitcom could not sustain its audience. In April 2010, Covington announced the show's cancellation via Twitter, citing low ratings. Although short-lived, the series remains available to stream on Hulu, serving as a curious footnote to the enduring legacy of the original film.
