Can a billionaire buy immortality by stealing the body of a struggling father?
In short: In the 2015 thriller Self/less, a dying tycoon pays to transfer his consciousness into a younger vessel. The procedure, known as shedding, promises eternal life but requires a dark, chemical secret to suppress the original owner's memories. When the tycoon discovers the truth, he faces an impossible moral choice.
Directed by Tarsem Singh, Self/less explores the ethics of transhumanism through the story of Damian Hale, a wealthy New Yorker diagnosed with terminal cancer. Hale encounters Professor Albright, who offers him a medical procedure called shedding. By staging his own death, Hale moves his consciousness into a younger body, assuming the identity of Edward Kidner. While Albright claims the vivid hallucinations Hale experiences are merely side effects, they are actually the surfacing memories of the body's original owner, a man named Mark Bitwell.
The narrative takes a turn when Hale tracks down Mark’s wife, Madeline, and daughter, Anna. He learns that Mark had sold his body to Albright to fund life-saving treatment for his child. Hale discovers that the medication he was prescribed is not for side effects; it is designed to permanently erase the original personality of the body. Without the pills, the host's consciousness will re-emerge, and the donor's mind will die. This revelation forces Hale to confront the reality that his survival depends on the total annihilation of an innocent man.
The film, which features Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley as the dual versions of Hale, struggled with critics, holding an 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its lukewarm reception, the film raises questions about the cost of longevity and the definition of identity. Ultimately, Hale chooses to stop taking the medication, allowing Mark to reclaim his life and reunite with his family. The production itself faced its own challenges, including multiple release delays and a modest $30.5 million global box office return against a $26 million budget.
