In short: Before its theatrical release, the film Semi-Pro utilized a massive grizzly bear named Rocky for wrestling scenes with Will Ferrell. Tragically, the bear was involved in a fatal incident with a trainer months later, highlighting the extreme and often dangerous lengths taken to create the film's eccentric, basketball-themed marketing and stunts.

Released in February 2008, Semi-Pro tells the story of Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder who buys the Flint Tropics, a struggling team in the final season of the American Basketball Association. Facing a league merger with the NBA, Moon attempts to save his team through increasingly absurd promotional stunts, including wrestling a live bear. This grizzly, a 7-foot-6-inch, 700-pound animal named Rocky, was central to the film's marketing and production, with stuntman Randy Miller doubling for Ferrell during the wrestling sequences.

The production's reliance on such stunts extended beyond the screen. The film's marketing campaign was notably aggressive, featuring Ferrell in character for Super Bowl commercials, Old Spice spots, and even a Sports Illustrated swimsuit spread. Despite this, the film struggled to replicate the box office success of Ferrell's previous sports spoofs, such as Talladega Nights and Blades of Glory. Critics were largely unimpressed, with the film holding a 23% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though some reviewers found merit in its blend of sports melodrama and parody.

Behind the scenes, the reality of the production proved darker than the comedy. In April 2008, just seven weeks after the film's wide release, Rocky the bear fatally bit trainer Stephan Miller during a separate filming session. While an investigation ruled the death accidental and the bear was not euthanized, the incident underscored the risks involved in using live animals for entertainment. Ultimately, Semi-Pro remains a curious artifact of 2000s comedy, marking the final film produced by New Line Cinema before its absorption by Warner Bros. Pictures.
