In short: When Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway reunited for the 2019 noir thriller Serenity, expectations were high. Instead, the film became a commercial and critical catastrophe. Behind the scenes, a strange plot twist involving artificial intelligence and a computer game turned a simple murder mystery into a widely mocked cinematic failure.

Directed by Steven Knight, Serenity follows Baker Dill, a fishing boat captain obsessed with catching a giant tuna named Justice. His life is interrupted when his ex-wife, Karen, arrives with a desperate plea: murder her abusive new husband, Frank, during a fishing trip. The narrative initially presents as a standard, if intense, noir thriller, but it soon pivots into a surreal meta-narrative.

The film reveals that Dill is actually a character within a computer game designed by Patrick, the young son of a U.S. Marine killed in Iraq in 2006. In this reality, the characters are artificial intelligence constructs living inside the boy's eye. As the game progresses, the boundaries between the digital construct and the real world blur, leading to a climax where the boy confronts his abusive step-father in real life using his father's knife.

The production was marred by controversy and poor reception. In Mauritius, where the film was shot, the government faced a scandal over the alleged misappropriation of 200 million Mauritian rupees to support the project. Upon release, the film was a commercial disaster, grossing only $14.4 million worldwide against a $25 million budget. Distributor Aviron Pictures abruptly pulled marketing support after disastrous test screenings, leaving the stars frustrated by the lack of promotion.

Critics and audiences were largely baffled by the film's execution. With a 21% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 'D+' grade from CinemaScore, it appeared on numerous 'worst of 2019' lists. Reviewers compared the experience to a 'long fishing day without a bite,' noting that the ambitious, high-concept twist failed to land, ultimately turning the film into a target for ridicule rather than the prestige thriller it intended to be.
