Why the 2021 G.I. Joe reboot struggled to find its footing at the box office
In short: Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins attempted to reinvent a classic toy-line character through a gritty, ninja-focused origin story. Despite a high-profile cast and ambitious production, the film became a notable box-office bomb, sparking intense debate over its departure from franchise traditions and its reception by both critics and fans.
Directed by Robert Schwentke, the 2021 film Snake Eyes served as a reboot for the G.I. Joe franchise, casting Henry Golding as the iconic, previously masked operative. The narrative follows the protagonist’s induction into the ancient Arashikage ninja clan while he simultaneously pursues vengeance for his father’s murder. This origin story significantly altered the character's background and ethnicity, a creative choice that drew commentary from Larry Hama, the writer of the original G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero comic, who noted that the character was originally conceived as a white man to contrast with the Asian character Storm Shadow.
The production faced significant hurdles, including a budget estimated between $88 million and $110 million. Upon its July 23, 2021 release, the film grossed only $40.1 million worldwide, falling far short of the $160–175 million required to break even. Critics were largely unimpressed, with the film holding a 35% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews frequently cited choppily edited action sequences, a lack of narrative cohesion, and a disconnect between the film’s tone and the established G.I. Joe lore. Some critics, such as Bilge Ebiri, praised the production design and visual ambition, but others found the martial arts choreography and character development lacking.
The film's failure at the box office was attributed to a combination of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, lukewarm reviews, and shifting audience preferences. Despite the commercial disappointment, the franchise continues to evolve. Following the film's release, Paramount Pictures explored new directions for the series, including projects focused on characters like Duke. By late 2026, the studio had confirmed Bradley Cooper for the role of Duke in a new installment, signaling that while the 2021 experiment did not yield the expected results, the studio remains committed to mining the G.I. Joe intellectual property for future cinematic ventures.
