In short: Released in 1987, G.I. Joe: The Movie introduced the world to Cobra-La, a prehistoric underground society. Though the name was intended as a temporary script placeholder inspired by Shangri-La, Hasbro executives insisted on keeping it. The film also famously features a last-minute plot change regarding the fate of Duke.

The 1987 animated film, known in the UK as Action Force: The Movie, was produced by Sunbow and Marvel Productions. Its plot centers on the discovery of Cobra-La, a hidden Himalayan civilization that ruled Earth 40,000 years ago before being driven underground by the Ice Age and human technological advancement. Led by Golobulus, this society seeks to reclaim the planet by using mutative spores and the Broadcast Energy Transmitter weapon. The narrative weaves in the origins of the villain Serpentor, who was created through dream manipulation by Doctor Mindbender at the behest of Cobra-La.

The film's production was marked by significant creative shifts. The name 'Cobra-La' was borrowed from the 1933 novel Lost Horizon, which featured the mythical city Shangri-La. Writers originally planned to rename the civilization, but Hasbro executives demanded the placeholder remain. Furthermore, the film's climax was altered due to external pressures. In the original script, the character Duke was meant to die after being struck by a snake spear. This plot point reportedly influenced the death of Optimus Prime in The Transformers: The Movie, which was in production simultaneously.

Following a severe backlash from parents and fans regarding Optimus Prime's death, Hasbro reversed its decision for the G.I. Joe film. While the visual sequence of Duke's injury remained, the dialogue was changed to indicate he had fallen into a coma rather than dying. Story editor Buzz Dixon noted that the original intent is still visible in the film's animation, where Duke appears to perish. Originally intended for a theatrical release, the movie premiered direct-to-video on August 25, 1987, following the poor box office performance of previous Hasbro films. It finally reached theaters in 2022 for a 35th-anniversary event hosted by Fathom Events.
