In short: Before they were swimming through Snorkland, the Snorks were a desperate corporate countermove. Born from a bitter rivalry over the rights to The Smurfs, these sea creatures were designed specifically to compete with one of history's most successful comic properties.

The origins of the Snorks are rooted in a 1977 legal and commercial conflict involving Freddy Monnickendam, a Belgian businessman. While negotiating rights for The Smurfs comics, Monnickendam entered into a dispute with the creator Peyo over how to adapt the characters for television. Peyo demanded strict faithfulness to the source material, while Monnickendam pushed for a more mainstream, accessible approach. When these negotiations failed and the rights remained divided, Monnickendam sought to create a rival property that could capture the same massive success as The Smurfs.

He turned to artist Nic Broca, who had originally designed robot characters for 'Diskies' in 1981. These were reimagined as minute sea animals, and the first Snorks comic book was published by Broca in January 1982 with funding from Persil's Belgian branch. The series eventually moved into animation through a partnership with Hanna-Barbera Productions and SEPP International S.A., debuting on NBC on September 15, 1984.

Despite the strategic goal of rivaling The Smurfs, critics suggest the Snorks never reached the same heights of popularity. However, they still became a global cultural fixture, running for four seasons and producing 65 episodes (108 segments) between 1984 and 1989. Interestingly, some critics speculate that because of their shared history and origins, the Snorks might actually exist within the same canonical universe as The Smurfs.

The franchise's legacy remains complex today due to these very roots. While it has enjoyed various syndications and DVD releases by Warner Archive, rights issues with SEPP (now Dodo Reanimation Lab) have prevented the show from appearing on major streaming platforms like HBO Max as of 2025.
