An alien family’s mission to destroy humanity is interrupted by the absurdity of Earth
In short: Created by Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan, Solar Opposites follows four aliens who crash-land on Earth after their homeworld is destroyed. While some embrace human culture, others plot to terraform the planet. The series is defined by its chaotic humor, meta-narratives, and a bizarre, high-stakes society living inside a bedroom wall.
Solar Opposites centers on Korvo, Terry, Yumyulack, and Jesse, Shlorpians who arrived on Earth as part of a mission to deploy an infant Pupa. This creature is destined to evolve and xenoform the planet into a replica of their lost home. The family dynamic is fractured: Korvo, the scientist leader, despises Earth, while Terry, his partner, finds human life fascinating. Their mission is complicated by the Pupa’s unpredictable nature and the family’s forced integration into suburban life.
The series is famous for its structural ambition, most notably 'The Wall'. Conceived as a season-long B-story, this terrarium in Yumyulack’s bedroom houses a miniature society of humans he has shrunk. This subplot evolved into a complex, parallel narrative that critics often cite as a highlight of the show. By the third season, the series expanded its scope further to include the SilverCops, a group of intergalactic police officers who brutalize Shlorpian refugees, adding a darker layer of sci-fi world-building to the sitcom format.
Production faced significant shifts, most notably when Justin Roiland was removed from the series in early 2023 following felony domestic abuse charges. Dan Stevens took over the role of Korvo starting with the fourth season, a transition that reviewers noted was seamless. Despite these changes, the show maintained a consistent critical reception, with Rotten Tomatoes scores for its second, third, and fourth seasons reaching 100%. The series concluded in October 2025 after six seasons and 63 episodes, leaving behind a legacy as one of Hulu’s most-watched original comedies.
