How a 1977 Dutch war thriller became a cultural touchstone and a revolving musical
In short: Soldier of Orange remains a landmark in Dutch cinema, tracing the divergent paths of university friends during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. From its origins as an autobiographical book to a record-breaking film and an innovative, rotating stage production, the story continues to resonate today.
Directed by Paul Verhoeven and released in 1977, Soldier of Orange was the most expensive Dutch film of its time, produced with a budget of ƒ 5 million. It follows a group of students in Leiden whose lives are irrevocably altered by the 1940 German invasion. While some join the resistance or flee to London to serve the government-in-exile, others are drawn into collaboration or military service for the occupiers, illustrating the complex, often tragic choices forced upon individuals during wartime.
The film’s narrative is deeply personal, based on the autobiography of Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema. Characters like Erik, played by Rutger Hauer, and Guus, played by Jeroen Krabbé, navigate a world of espionage, betrayal, and survival. The story culminates in the return of Queen Wilhelmina, but not before the characters face the brutal realities of the conflict, including execution, infiltration, and the moral ambiguity of those who collaborated to save loved ones.
Beyond its initial success—which included over 1.5 million viewers in 1977 and a Golden Globe nomination—the story evolved into a unique theatrical experience. Premiering in 2010, the musical adaptation utilized a system called SceneAround, where the audience’s seating area revolved to face different stages, including a set featuring a real Douglas DC-3 Dakota plane. This production, housed in a converted hangar at the former Valkenburg Air Base, has become a long-running fixture in the Netherlands, with a final performance scheduled for 12 July 2026.
