In short: Sortilegio, a 2009 Mexican telenovela, centers on a dark deception involving inheritance, secret half-siblings, and a staged marriage. When a wealthy patriarch dies, his resentful son attempts to usurp his brother's fortune by tricking an innocent woman into a fraudulent marriage, sparking a saga of intrigue and corporate rivalry.

Produced by Carla Estrada for Televisa, Sortilegio is a remake of the earlier telenovela Tú o nadie. The narrative begins with a long-hidden secret: Victoria and Antonio Lombardo, who eventually marry, share a history of infidelity. They raised their children—Bruno, Raquel, and Alejandro—as step-siblings to conceal that Bruno and Raquel were actually born from Victoria's affair with Antonio. This deception sets the stage for deep-seated resentment, particularly from Bruno, who is portrayed as irresponsible and lawless compared to his disciplined brother, Alejandro.

The central conflict ignites when Antonio decides to leave his entire fortune to Alejandro. After Antonio is killed in a fatal accident, Bruno orchestrates a sinister plot to seize the inheritance. He impersonates Alejandro to marry Maria Jose, a sweet and innocent woman, intending to kill his brother and leave Maria Jose as a wealthy widow. When Maria Jose discovers the deception, Bruno coerces her into maintaining the charade by threatening to imprison her father. The plan unravels, however, when Alejandro miraculously returns alive, completely unaware of the marriage or the scheme.

The story evolves into a complex drama of sibling rivalry, corporate espionage, and shifting loyalties. As Alejandro investigates the truth behind his supposed marriage, he finds himself falling in love with Maria Jose, who is trapped between her fear of Bruno and her growing feelings for the man she was tricked into betraying. The series, which starred Jacqueline Bracamontes and William Levy, became a staple of Spanish-language television, seeing multiple re-broadcasts on networks like Univision, Galavisión, and UniMás between 2009 and 2016. Its title, Sortilegio, translates to 'love spell' in English-speaking markets, reflecting the intense and often magical pull of the romantic and familial entanglements that define the show's enduring appeal.
