The nine-film saga that was canceled before it could begin
In short: George Lucas originally planned a massive expansion of the Star Wars universe as early as 1976. While we know the original trilogy, his discarded blueprints for a sequel series reveal a sprawling narrative involving three generations and complex moral inquiries—ideas that were shelved for decades before Disney eventually revived them.
In 1976, George Lucas first envisioned a sequel trilogy as part of an expansive nine-film saga. By late 1980, he had developed 'twelve-page outlines' for these stories, which were intended to progress over fifty or sixty years. These discarded plans were remarkably specific: they would have featured Luke Skywalker in his 30s and 40s, explored the rebuilding of the Republic, and focused on philosophical themes like justice and passing on knowledge. Lucas even planned for R2-D2 and C-3PO to be the only characters appearing in all nine films.
However, the pressure of producing the first three films led Lucas to cancel these plans by 1981. He pivoted to a six-film structure, stating that the story effectively ended with Luke's redemption of his father. In later years, he frequently dismissed the idea of further sequels, even suggesting in 2002 that if any more were made, they would be 'made up' because there was no remaining story. He eventually left explicit instructions for no more feature films to be produced after his death, asserting that the true tragedy of the saga was contained within Darth Vader's arc.
The trajectory changed in 2011 when Disney entered negotiations to acquire Lucasfilm. While Lucas initially considered directing a sequel himself, he ultimately chose to step away from blockbuster filmmaking to focus on his museum project. This transition allowed for the production of Episodes VII through IX, released between 2015 and 2019. These new films were produced by Lucasfilm but distributed by Walt Disney Studios, marking a departure from Lucas's original vision of a completed six-part narrative.
