The accidental architect of Michael Jackson’s most iconic melodies
In short: Before it became a global phenomenon, the song 'Human Nature' was a mere afterthought on a cassette tape. Steve Porcaro, a pioneer of analog synthesis and Toto co-founder, unknowingly handed Quincy Jones a masterpiece while simply trying to store a demo.
Steve Porcaro's contribution to pop history is defined by a blend of technical precision and serendipity. As a founding member of the rock band Toto, Porcaro helped craft a sound that earned him three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for Toto IV. While his bandmates often handled piano duties, Porcaro specialized in the creative textures of analog synthesis, utilizing iconic instruments like the Minimoog, ARP 2600, and Yamaha CS-80 to define the era's sonic landscape.
His impact extended far beyond the Toto catalog. In a famous instance of musical luck, Porcaro sent a demo tape to producer Quincy Jones for the 'Thriller' sessions. Lacking extra storage, he placed the track 'Human Nature' on the back of the cassette. Jones selected the song for Michael Jackson, leading to a prolific collaboration that saw Porcar<0xA0>caro co-writing tracks like 'Chicago 1945' and 'Dream Away' between 1982 and 2009.
Porcaro’s career also mirrors the evolution of music technology. He began his journey under the tutelage of his father, jazz drummer Joe Porcaro, playing a Farfisa organ. He transitioned from the heavy hardware of the 1970s—including the Prophet 5 and Roland Jupiter-8—to the software-driven virtual rigs of the 2010s. Despite personal challenges, including losing hearing in his left ear following surgery for a benign brain tumor in the early 2010s, his influence as a composer for film and television remains profound.
