In short: Jeff Porcaro was more than just the drummer for Toto. As one of history's most recorded session musicians, his unique rhythmic precision shaped the mainstream pop and rock landscape for decades, leaving an indelible mark on albums by legends like Michael Jackson.

Born in 1954 in Hartford, Connecticut, Porcaro was a musical prodigy who began playing drums at age seven. He rose to prominence in the mid-1970s, notably through his work on Steely Dan's 1975 album Katy Lied. By the 1980s, his influence was so pervasive that AllMusic suggested the sound of mainstream pop/rock drumming during that era was largely defined by his style.

Porcaro was a master of complex rhythms, most famously seen in the 'Half-Time Shuffle Groove' used on Toto's Grammy-winning track "Rosanna" from the album Toto IV. This signature sound was a sophisticated hybrid: he blended Bernard Purdie's "Purdie Shuffle" with the groove from John Bonham's performance on Led Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain," while maintaining a Bo Diddley beat on the bass drum.

His session credits were vast, including four tracks on Michael Jackson's Thriller and the hit "Heal the World" from Dangerous. He also collaborated with artists such as Al Stewart, 10cc, and Boz Scaggs. His technical mastery earned him a posthumous induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1993.

His death in 1992 remains a subject of dispute. While doctors initially attributed his heart attack to an allergic reaction to inhaled pesticide while he was working in his yard, the LA County coroner later ruled the cause was coronary artery disease resulting from cocaine use. Porcaro's family and bandmates have rejected the coroner's findings, maintaining that the pesticide was to blame.

Porcaro's legacy continues through the Jeff Porcaro Memorial Fund, which supports music and art departments at his former school, Ulysses S. Grant High School in Los Angeles.
