How a rejected codename became a powerhouse in PlayStation Studios

In short: From a group of Microsoft employees struggling to find funding to a premier PlayStation developer, Sucker Punch Productions turned a rejected project codename into a studio name. Their journey from a niche Nintendo 64 developer to the creators of the massive hit Ghost of Tsushima is a masterclass in creative evolution.

The studio launched with a pivot in October 1997, established by Chris Zimmerman, Brian Fleming, Bruce Oberg, Darrell Plank, Tom Saxton, Cathy Saxton and Cathy Saxton. Originally intending to develop for the Nintendo 64 under the codename Puzzle Factory, the founders—many of whom were former Microsoft employees—faced significant hurdles. They struggled to secure publishers, with companies like Activision, Acclaim Entertainment, and even Sony initially declining their pitches. Even Electronic Arts offered a deal for a PlayStation 2 title, but only on the condition that they cancel their current project, Sprocket.

The studio's breakthrough came through the Sly Cooper franchise. After the commercial failure of their first released game, Rocket: Robot on Wheels, in 1999, the team pivoted to the PlayStation 2. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, released in 2002, became an unexpected success, selling approximately 1 million copies. This success allowed the studio to expand into the superhero genre with the Infamous series, which began in 2009. This era marked a significant shift toward open-world design and eventually led to Sony's full acquisition of the studio in August 2011.

By 2020, the studio had grown to approximately 160 employees and moved into high-budget, large-scale productions. Their most significant achievement to date is Ghost of Tsushima, released in July 2020. The game, which took six years to develop, became one of Sony's fastest-selling original titles, with sales exceeding 13 million copies by September 2024. The studio’s influence has expanded beyond gaming, with directors Jason Connell and Fox serving as tourism ambassadors for Tsushima in 2021, and a film adaptation currently in development.
