A violent past resurfaces when a police chief's secrets catch up to him
In short: In the Canadian Rockies, Jim Worth appears to be a gentle police chief. However, his history as a Liverpool detective hides a darker identity. When his family is threatened by the powerful North Stream Oil company, his violent alter-ego, Jack Devlin, emerges to protect them at any cost.
Rowan Joffé produced this British crime drama, Tin Star, which depicts Jim Worth's life after leaving the Liverpool Metropolitan Police Service to settle in Little Big Bear. Settled in the Rocky Mountains with his wife, Angela, and their children, Worth attempts to lead a quiet life as the town's police chief. However, the dominance of North Stream Oil in the region creates a volatile environment where ethics and criminality frequently collide.
The series explores the duality of Worth's character through his struggle with alcohol. When under the influence, he slips into the persona of Jack Devlin, a violent version of himself capable of eliminating anyone he perceives as a threat to his family. This transformation is triggered when the security interests of North Stream Oil bring his criminal past into direct conflict with his new life.
The narrative tension is heightened by characters like Elizabeth Bradshaw, the Vice President of Stakeholder Relations for North Stream Oil, who operates on morally ambiguous ground. As the series progresses, the setting shifts from the Canadian wilderness to Liverpool, England, for the third and final series. This final chapter, which began production in 2019 and was released in December 2020, sees the family confronting the forces seeking their destruction.
The production of the first series involved filming in Alberta from June to December 2016, primarily in High River, located south of Calgary. While the show premiered on Sky Atlantic on 7 September 2017, international viewers accessed it via Amazon Video shortly after.
