In short: In the 1962 French drama Sundays and Cybèle, a traumatized war veteran forms an intense, secret bond with an 11-year-old girl living in a boarding school. Their weekly meetings in a park offer a fragile escape, but their innocent connection is tragically misunderstood by the adults surrounding them.

Directed by Serge Bourguignon, the film follows Pierre, a pilot suffering from amnesia and vertigo after the French Indochina War. His life in the Paris suburb of Ville-d'Avray is marked by a sense of detachment until he encounters a young girl at a train station. Abandoned by her father and placed in St. Marguerite's boarding school, she is lonely and desperate for connection. Pierre begins visiting her, posing as her father to take her on Sunday outings, where she eventually reveals her true name: Cybèle.

The pair finds solace in their shared isolation, but their relationship draws suspicion from those around them. While Pierre's partner, Madeleine, initially worries about his behavior, she eventually realizes the bond is innocent. However, a misunderstanding involving a stolen Christmas tree and a metal rooster leads to a fatal intervention by the police. Believing Pierre is a threat to the child, officers confront him, resulting in his death and leaving Cybèle devastated by the loss of her only protector.

The film, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1963, remains a poignant exploration of trauma and the need for human connection. It was also recognized by the Academy with nominations for its screenplay and musical score in 1964. Despite its critical acclaim, the film presents a haunting look at how society often fails to comprehend the pure, non-romantic bonds formed between those who feel like outcasts in the world.
