A blind girl's sight brings ruin to a mountain village's fragile moral order.
In short: In the 1946 French drama La Symphonie pastorale, a middle-aged pastor adopts a blind girl named Gertrude. As she matures, a complex web of forbidden affection entangles the pastor and his own son, Jacques. When a medical miracle restores Gertrude's vision, the truth shatters the lives of everyone involved.
Directed by Jean Delannoy, La Symphonie pastorale is a cinematic adaptation of the novella by André Gide. The narrative centers on a pastor who takes in Gertrude, a young blind girl, and raises her in a secluded mountain village. As Gertrude blossoms into a young woman, the pastor finds himself grappling with inappropriate romantic feelings for his ward. This domestic tension is further complicated by the pastor's son, Jacques, who also falls in love with Gertrude despite being betrothed to another woman.
The plot reaches a critical turning point when Jacques's fiancée, driven by jealousy, orchestrates a medical intervention to restore Gertrude's sight. The hope is that by curing her blindness, Jacques will be forced to make a clear choice between the two women. However, the outcome is far from the intended resolution. Upon regaining her sight, Gertrude returns to the village fundamentally transformed, unable to reconcile her previous innocence with the harsh realities of the desires she now perceives around her.
The film, which features a score by Georges Auric and was shot at the Neuilly Studios in Paris with location work in Rossinière, Switzerland, achieved significant critical acclaim. At the 1946 Cannes Film Festival, it secured the Grand Prix and earned Michèle Morgan the Best Actress award. Beyond its initial success, the film maintained a lasting legacy; it was selected for the opening gala of the Cameo cinema in Edinburgh in March 1949, and a rare print was screened there again in 2009 to mark its 60th anniversary. The story serves as a poignant exploration of how the sudden acquisition of clarity can destroy the illusions that sustain human happiness, leaving the protagonist disillusioned by the affections of the men who once claimed to care for her.
