In short: Before it was a global spectacle, the Super Bowl was a desperate attempt to settle a bitter rivalry. In January 1967, the NFL and the upstart AFL met to prove which league truly ruled professional football, amidst a massive bidding war for talent and deep-seated animosity.

The game, originally called the AFL–NFL World Championship Game, was born from a merger agreement signed on June 9, 1966. This pact sought to conclude the intense competition for football talent and college recruits—a dispute that intensified during early 1966 after the NFL's New York Giants recruited AFL athlete Pete Gogolak, an event the AFL labelled an 'act of war.'

The matchup featured the NFL champion Green Bay Packers against the AFL champion Kansas City Chiefs. Many observers expected a blowout, believing the established NFL was vastly superior to the 'upstart' AFL. The tension was palpable; while the Packers were an NFL dynasty, the Chiefs' owner, Lamar Hunt, had actually founded the AFL.

Broadcast simultaneously on NBC and CBS, the match took place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on January 15, 1967, representing a unique televised occasion. While the first half was competitive—with the Chiefs leading 14–10 and outgaining the Packers 181 to 164 in total yards—the momentum shifted in the third quarter. A 50-yard interception return by Packers safety Willie Wood sparked a 21-point unanswered run.

The Packers ultimately secured a 35–10 victory, with quarterback Bart Starr earning MVP honors after completing 16 of 23 passes for 250 yards. The match also represented a shift in equipment technology, acting as the final professional football contest held with double-support goalposts before the 'slingshot' design became the norm.
