In short: Before she was a household name on BBC Breakfast and Channel 4, Steph McGovern was a rising star in the engineering world. A former Arkwright Engineering Scholar, she used industrial efficiency to save major corporations hundreds of thousands of pounds before transitioning into broadcast journalism.

Born in 1982 in North Shields, Steph McGovern’s career began with a focus on technical precision rather than media. While studying at Macmillan Academy, she won an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship in 1998, demonstrating early potential as a future leader in the engineering sector. This expertise proved useful while working as a junior Six Sigma team member for Black+Decker in Spennymoor during a gap year. There, she helped improve production techniques for the Leaf Hog, a device that functions as a blower, vacuum, and mulcher, resulting in annual savings of £150,000 for the company.

After earning a BSc in science communication and policy from University College London in 2005, McGovern transitioned into journalism. She climbed the ranks at the BBC, working as a researcher and producer for high-profile programs like Today on Radio 4 and various news bulletins. By 2011, she had become the main business presenter for BBC Breakfast, replacing Simon Jack. Her expertise in finance and consumer affairs led to roles on programs such as Shop Well for Less, Watchdog, and the podcast The Rest Is Money.

Beyond business, McGovern has explored diverse media formats, from hosting the Channel 4 series Steph's Packed Lunch to appearing as a contestant on The Masked Dancer under the name 'Tomato Sauce'. In 2021, her commitment to vocational training and engineering led to her being named an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
