How a fictional big-box store became one of television's most critically acclaimed workplace comedies
In short: Superstore, the NBC sitcom set in a fictional St. Louis big-box chain, evolved from a shaky pilot into a beloved ensemble comedy. Over six seasons, the show balanced sharp workplace satire with heartfelt character arcs, eventually earning perfect critical approval ratings for its later seasons before concluding in 2021.
Created by Justin Spitzer, Superstore debuted on NBC in 2015, following the lives of employees at Cloud 9, Store 1217. The series utilized a unique setting—a massive store that sold everything from groceries to firearms—to explore the realities of retail labor. While the pilot was filmed in a real, redressed Kmart in Burbank, the remainder of the series was produced on constructed soundstages. The show was notable for its ensemble cast, featuring America Ferrera as Amy Dubanowski and Ben Feldman as Jonah Simms, alongside characters like the intense assistant manager Dina Fox and the perpetually optimistic manager Glenn Sturgis.
The series was initially met with mixed reviews, with critics noting a tonally jumbled presentation and formulaic writing in its early episodes. However, the show quickly found its footing. By the second season, it had earned a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its ability to tackle heavy, timely issues with humor. Throughout its run, the show addressed complex topics including immigration status, unionization efforts, and the lack of corporate benefits like paid maternity leave or overtime. Its success led to international adaptations, including the Mexican series Supertitlán, which premiered in 2022.
Production faced significant challenges, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced an early end to the fifth season and delayed the departure of America Ferrera. Originally slated to leave after season five, Ferrera returned for the first two and final three episodes of the sixth season to ensure proper closure for her character. Despite a spin-off featuring Cheyenne and Bo being in early development, the project was ultimately canceled by NBC in 2021. The series finale aired on March 25, 2021, cementing the show's legacy as a sharp, essential workplace comedy that successfully graduated from the clearance section of network television.
