A retail rivalry fueled by romance and workplace deception
In short: In this 2006 comedy, two warehouse club employees compete for the affection of a new cashier. What begins as a quest for a prestigious title spirals into a battle of wits, involving stolen credit, secret surveillance, and a high-stakes competition that reveals a dark side to workplace efficiency.
Directed by Greg Coolidge, the film follows Zack Bradley, a long-term box boy at Super Club, and his rival Vince Downey. While Vince is a popular head cashier, he is also depicted as a misogynistic predator who uses deception to hide his abuse of power from management. The rivalry intensifies when a new cashier, Amy Renfro, arrives, sparking a romantic competition between the two men. Zack's struggle for stability follows a failed business attempt. He lives with his grandmother while navigating the store's competitive environment.
The plot explores the tension between corporate efficiency and workplace ethics. The competition for the 'Employee of the Month' title takes a dramatic turn when surveillance footage from a loss prevention associate, Semi, reveals that Vince has been 'skip-scanning'—concealing scanned items to maintain his speed. This deceptive practice, intended to bolster his performance metrics, ultimately leads to his arrest for grand larceny. The intense rivalry is further complicated by Zack's decision to resign during a tie-breaking contest. This move ultimately helps his friend Iqbal secure his position back at the company.
Despite facing critical backlash, the film found commercial success. It grossed $38.4 million worldwide against a budget estimated between $10 million and $12 million. While critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 20% positive rating, noting a lack of 'satiric bite,' the film's long-term value was seen in its home media releases. The DVD and Blu-ray versions, released in early 2007, generated over $61 million in revenue. In the United Kingdom, the movie debuted at number four with over £1,000,000 in returns. It also became the most requested title on AOL.
