Why a box-office disaster became one of the greatest films in American history
In short: When Sweet Smell of Success premiered in 1957, audiences recoiled in disgust from its cynical, sharp-tongued characters. Today, the film is hailed as a masterpiece of noir. It captures the frantic, neurotic energy of mid-century Manhattan through a brutal story of power, ambition, and the corrupting influence of celebrity journalism.
Directed by Alexander Mackendrick, the film follows J.J. Hunsecker, a ruthless newspaper columnist who wields his influence to destroy his sister's romantic life. Based on the real-life columnist Walter Winchell, Hunsecker is a media kingpin who treats people like pawns. The story, adapted from Ernest Lehman’s novelette, was refined by playwright Clifford Odets, who spent four months obsessively rewriting the script, often handing pages to actors just hours before filming began.
The production was fraught with tension. Mackendrick, fearing the volatility of producer Burt Lancaster, leaned into the actor's intimidating presence to craft the character of Hunsecker. By using low-angle shots and specific lighting, the team created a visual language of shadows and menace. Despite this meticulous craft, the film was a commercial failure, losing at least $400,000 during its initial run. Audiences, accustomed to seeing star Tony Curtis in lighter roles, were unprepared for his portrayal of the scheming press agent Sidney Falco.
Over the decades, the film’s reputation underwent a radical transformation. Critics began to praise its whiplash dialogue and atmospheric cinematography, eventually cementing its status as a seminal work of noir. In 1993, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. Today, it is studied for its profound exploration of power worship and remains a touchstone for filmmakers, cited by creators like Vince Gilligan as a primary influence.
