How one French music show redefined the art of the television duet
In short: Since 1993, Taratata has been a cornerstone of French musical television. By prioritizing original music and unexpected collaborations, it moved beyond standard variety shows to become a uniquely creative force, launching the careers of international stars through high-stakes live performances and spontaneous, unlikely musical pairings.
Launched in 1993 on Antenne 2, Taratata introduced a refreshing departure from typical music programming. Hosted by Nagui, the show focused on showcasing both current acts and emerging talent through a blend of live and pre-recorded footage. Its signature was the element of surprise, often featuring unlikely duets and brief, intimate interviews that allowed artists to connect with audiences on a more human level. This creative approach was so distinct that in April 2009, the Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel officially identified the program as a uniquely creative entity within the French television landscape.
The show's influence extends far beyond the borders of France. It has aired across Europe via TV5MONDE Europe on Saturday nights and has even been franchised to Dubai Television, which utilizes an almost identical format in Arabic. The stage has hosted a diverse roster of global icons, including David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, and Muse. For many international artists like Katie Melua, Ayo, and Devendra Banhart, the program served as their official French television debut, providing a vital platform for their entry into the European market.
Despite its prestige, the show has faced periods of uncertainty. Following an initial cancellation in 2000, it returned in April 2005 on France 4, appearing in prime time on France 3 and monthly on late-night slots on France 2 and Virgin Radio. While France Télévisions announced the program's cancellation on 31 May 2013, the show's legacy persisted through a web-only format and a special concert at the Zénith de Paris on 10 October 2013. The program eventually saw a resurgence in a new form, returning as Taratata 100% live on 24 October 2015.
