The Singing Bee: How a Staged Karaoke Competition Became a Surprise Summer Television Hit
In short: Before it became a staple of CMT, The Singing Bee launched on NBC in 2007 to beat a rival show to the air. While it appeared to be an spontaneous sing-along, the contestants were actually preselected and guided by scrolling lyrics, turning a karaoke-style game into a highly produced spectacle.
The Singing Bee premiered on July 10, 2007, hosted by Joey Fatone, and immediately captured a massive audience with 13.1 million viewers for its debut. This performance made it the largest summer premiere since Dancing with the Stars. Despite this strong start, the show faced a volatile run on NBC, struggling with ratings that plummeted to a 1.7 by October 2007. NBC eventually canceled the program in 2008, leaving it off their schedule for the following season.
The show's format combined elements of a spelling bee with karaoke, tasking contestants with completing song lyrics under pressure. While the premise suggested spontaneity, the selection process was carefully managed; audience members were preselected, and lyrics were often displayed on banners to prevent errors. The competition featured various rounds like 'Scrambled Lyrics' and 'Karaoke Challenge,' culminating in the 'Final Countdown,' where contestants could win up to $50,000 on the NBC version by correctly singing lyrics without knowing the song's title or artist.
Following its NBC cancellation, the series found a second life on CMT in 2009, hosted by Melissa Peterman. This iteration introduced new scoring mechanics, such as awarding points for correct blanks in the 'Karaoke Challenge' and smaller cash prizes for the 'Final Countdown.' The CMT version proved more durable, running until its final episode aired on July 23, 2012. The format's influence even extended internationally, with shows like Morocco's Fasilah adopting the American rules by September 2007.
