Why Terminator Genisys reimagined a franchise by treating its timeline like a multiverse
In short: Terminator Genisys attempted a bold reset of a legendary sci-fi franchise by discarding previous sequels and treating its timeline as a complex multiverse. By reimagining the iconic 1984 and 1991 entries, the film introduced a new, dysfunctional family dynamic while exploring the terrifying prospect of humanity inviting Skynet into their lives.
Development of the fifth Terminator installment began after the Halcyon Company filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Following a complex series of rights auctions, Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures acquired the franchise in 2011, eventually partnering with Skydance Productions. Producers consulted original creator James Cameron, who encouraged them to embrace the idea that the Terminator’s living tissue could age, allowing Arnold Schwarzenegger to return as a mentor figure known as Pops.
The narrative structure of Genisys deviates significantly from its predecessors. Rather than adhering to a single, inevitable timeline, writers Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier mapped out a multiverse where various timelines exist simultaneously. This allowed the film to revisit 1984 while introducing new threats, such as the T-5000, which infects John Connor with nanomachines to transform him into a cyborg. The film posits that humanity’s addiction to technology makes it easy to imagine a world where people willingly invite a system like Genisys into their daily lives.
Production was a massive undertaking, with principal photography beginning in April 2014 across New Orleans and San Francisco. The filmmakers went to great lengths to capture the aesthetic of the original films, even having Nike reproduce discontinued Vandal sneakers for Jai Courtney. Despite grossing $440.6 million worldwide, the film underperformed relative to expectations, leading to the cancellation of planned sequels and a television spin-off. While critics largely panned the plot, the film remains a unique, standalone reimagining that sought to blend the love story of the original with the father-son dynamics of its sequel.
