In short: The 13th Warrior was one of the most expensive flops in cinema history, losing up to $129 million. Yet, this historical action film, based on a Michael Crichton novel, has since earned a devoted following for its rare portrayal of a Muslim protagonist leading a Norse adventure.

Directed by John McTiernan, the 1999 film follows Ahmad ibn Fadlan, a court poet from Baghdad exiled as an ambassador to the Volga Bulgars. Played by Antonio Banderas, the character is forced to join a group of twelve Norse warriors on a quest to defeat an ancient, cannibalistic evil known as the Wendol. The production was notoriously troubled, with costs ballooning from an initial $85 million to an estimated $160 million. Following poor test audience reactions, author Michael Crichton took over as director for uncredited reshoots, leading to a year-long delay, a new musical score by Jerry Goldsmith, and a title change from Eaters of the Dead.

The film's troubled history extended to its creative vision. McTiernan clashed with studios over the inclusion of subtitles, arguing that the audience should share the protagonist's confusion when he first encounters the Norse language. He also lamented the loss of his intended ending, which he wanted to model after the Battle of Isandlwana, where enemies salute the courage of the fallen. Furthermore, McTiernan criticized the removal of a scene depicting a ritual sacrifice, which he felt was essential to understanding the film's recurring prayer for the dead.

Critical reception was polarized. While Roger Ebert dismissed the film as a series of expensive set-pieces, other critics like Lisa Schwarzbaum praised its audacity. The experience was so disheartening for actor Omar Sharif that he temporarily retired from acting, calling the process humiliating. Despite a worldwide gross of only $61.7 million, the film has found a second life. It is now frequently cited for its pioneering role in centering a Muslim hero in a Hollywood blockbuster, a legacy that has helped it transcend its status as a commercial failure.
