A brutal Viking odyssey that failed at the box office but found its cult
In short: Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2009 film Valhalla Rising is a visually arresting, minimalist exploration of faith and violence. Starring Mads Mikkelsen as a mute, one-eyed warrior, the film follows a doomed expedition from 12th-century Scotland to the unknown, ultimately becoming a polarizing masterpiece that struggled to recoup its production costs.
Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and co-written with Roy Jacobsen, Valhalla Rising is a period adventure set in the 12th century. The story centers on a mysterious, mute thrall known as One-Eye, who escapes captivity in Scotland after a vision leads him to a hidden arrowhead. He joins a group of Christian Crusaders seeking the Holy Land, only to find themselves lost in the North Atlantic and eventually arriving in a strange, uncharted territory. The film is noted for its lack of formal character names, with the moniker One-Eye bestowed by a young boy who accompanies him throughout the journey.
The production was shot entirely in Scotland, with a title inspired by Kenneth Anger’s films Scorpio Rising and Lucifer Rising. Despite its atmospheric, hypnotic aesthetic, the film was a commercial disappointment. With a production budget of $5.7 million, it earned only about $731,613. Critical reception was equally divided; while some reviewers praised its brutal, uncompromising vision, others found it self-important or slow-paced. Danish critics were particularly split, with one outlet calling it a masterpiece while another labeled it unbearable.
The film’s soundscape is as deliberate as its visuals. Originally, Refn intended for the band Mogwai to compose the score, but the final work was created by Peter Peter, Peter Kyed, Giles Lamb, and Douglas MacDougall. The soundtrack, released in 2013, reflects the film’s dense, portentous atmosphere. By the end of the narrative, the protagonist’s journey concludes in a surreal, almost mythic fashion, leaving the boy alone as One-Eye’s face appears in the clouds—a final, haunting image that cements the film’s status as a unique, if challenging, piece of modern cinema.
