In short: Commissioned by the European Broadcasting Union, The Animals of Farthing Wood was a massive international collaboration between British and French studios. Spanning three series between 1993 and 1995, this ambitious adaptation of Colin Dann’s books left a lasting mark on viewers, despite a surprisingly long wait for official home releases.

The series was a joint production between London-based Telemagination and Montpellier’s La Fabrique. This dual-location approach created a unique, if occasionally inconsistent, visual identity. While the setting remained largely ambiguous to maintain a universal appeal, eagle-eyed viewers could spot subtle clues about the production’s geography, such as traffic driving on the right in the first series or a French inscription on a gravestone in the second.

The narrative followed a group of animals forced to abandon their home due to human suburban development. Guided by Toad and led by Fox, the ensemble embarked on a perilous journey to the sanctuary of White Deer Park. The subsequent series expanded this world, introducing complex social dynamics between the original group, the park's residents, and outsiders like the blue fox, Scarface. The show was notable for its serious tone and its willingness to adapt the source material with specific, sometimes controversial, changes.

Despite its popularity, the show’s commercial afterlife was fragmented. For years, fans relied on VHS tapes or unofficial DVDs, as an official English-language box set did not arrive until 2016 via Network Distributing. The United States market saw a distinct version, featuring added songs and a notable recast of the lead character, Fox, voiced by Ralph Macchio. Beyond the screen, the franchise spawned an extensive array of merchandise, including a 130-part magazine, CD-ROM games, and collectible figurines produced by Hornby, cementing its status as a significant piece of 1990s children's media.
