Why the birds and pigs finally stopped fighting in their second cinematic outing
In short: In a surprising departure from their game-based rivalry, the birds and pigs of the Angry Birds franchise formed an unlikely alliance to combat a common threat. This creative pivot was designed to surprise audiences while reflecting the need for cooperation in an increasingly polarized world, marking a significant evolution for the series.
Released in 2019, The Angry Birds Movie 2 expanded the franchise's scope by introducing Eagle Island, a third location ruled by the villainous Zeta. The plot follows Red, the hero of the first film, as he struggles with deep-seated insecurities about his popularity. Fearing that peace with the pigs would render him obsolete, Red initially resists the truce proposed by the pig leader, Leonard, after a giant ice ball crashes near Piggy Island. However, the necessity of stopping Zeta’s plan to destroy both islands with a lava-filled superweapon forces the former enemies to collaborate.
The production team, led by director Thurop Van Orman, sought to move beyond the source material to offer a fresh experience. Josh Gad, who voices Chuck, noted that the decision to unite the birds and pigs felt appropriate given the political climate of the time, where finding common ground is a significant challenge. This narrative shift allowed for a more adventurous tone, introducing new characters like Silver, an engineering student who helps Red overcome his fear of losing his heroic status. The film also features a subplot involving three hatchlings on a quest to recover lost eggs, adding layers to the central mission.
Technically, the film presented substantial challenges for the animators at Sony Pictures Imageworks. Creating realistic plumage required upgrading systems used since 1999, and the character Zeta proved particularly complex, requiring over 1,000 individual controls for her face and flexible torso. Despite a demanding production schedule and the unavailability of some staff who were working on other projects, the film grossed $152.8 million worldwide. Critics generally praised the sequel as an improvement over the 2016 original, noting its humor and the effectiveness of the new team-up dynamic. The franchise continues to evolve, with a third installment currently scheduled for release in December 2026 under Paramount Pictures.
