Can a dog truly understand the complexities of human life and professional auto racing?
In short: The Art of Racing in the Rain explores the profound bond between a race car driver and his golden retriever, Enzo. Through the eyes of a dog who believes in the Mongolian legend of reincarnation, the film navigates love, loss, and the relentless pursuit of a Formula One dream.
Based on the 2008 novel by Garth Stein, the 2019 film adaptation follows Denny Swift, a professional driver struggling to balance his career with family life. His constant companion is Enzo, a golden retriever who observes the world with a uniquely human-like perspective. The narrative is framed by Enzo’s belief in a Mongolian tradition suggesting that a dog who has lived a full life may be reincarnated as a human in his next existence.
The plot centers on the challenges Denny faces, including the illness and death of his wife, Eve, and a subsequent legal battle for custody of his daughter, Zoë. These personal tragedies are juxtaposed against his professional aspirations in the high-stakes world of auto racing. The film’s emotional core relies on the premise that the lessons learned on the racetrack—such as maintaining focus and anticipating the movements of others—are directly applicable to navigating the unpredictability of human relationships and grief.
Critical reception was notably mixed, with the film holding a 44% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While some reviewers found the story sentimental and contrived, others noted that its emotional impact was difficult to resist. Despite the critical divide, audiences responded more favorably, awarding the film an A- grade on CinemaScore. The production itself had a long journey to the screen, with rights passing through Universal and Disney before finally being produced by 20th Century Fox, with filming taking place across various Canadian and American tracks.
