Can a dog find its true purpose through a series of multiple reincarnations?
In short: The 2017 film A Dog's Purpose explores the life of a canine protagonist who retains memories across several lifetimes. While the story centers on themes of loyalty and human connection, its production was marred by controversy regarding animal treatment, sparking public boycotts and intense scrutiny from advocacy groups.
Directed by Lasse Hallström and based on the 2010 novel by W. Bruce Cameron, the film follows a dog that experiences various incarnations, starting as a feral puppy in the 1950s and later as a Red Retriever named Bailey. Bailey forms a deep bond with a boy named Ethan Montgomery, eventually deciding that Ethan is his ultimate purpose. The narrative spans decades, depicting Bailey’s subsequent lives as a police dog named Ellie, a Corgi named Tino, and finally a St. Bernard mix named Waffles, who eventually reunites with an elderly Ethan.
The film’s release in January 2017 was complicated by a leaked video showing a German Shepherd named Hercules appearing to resist being forced into rushing water during production. The footage, which led to calls for a boycott by PETA and the cancellation of the Los Angeles premiere, prompted an investigation by the American Humane Association. Amblin Entertainment later stated that the video was edited to mislead the public, and an independent expert concluded that safety measures were actually in place on set.
Despite the controversy and mixed critical reception—with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 35% approval rating—the film was a financial success, grossing $205 million worldwide against a $22 million budget. Audiences were more receptive than critics, awarding it an 'A' grade on CinemaScore. The film’s exploration of canine loyalty and the human-animal bond resonated enough to spawn a 2019 sequel, A Dog's Journey, which continued the story of the reincarnated protagonist.
