The secret mission behind the 2019 action film The Balkan Line
In short: Released in 2019, The Balkan Line dramatizes a clandestine Russian operation to seize Slatina Airport during the 1999 Kosovo War. While the film features intense combat and a high-stakes rescue mission, the real-life events that inspired the story remain largely classified, leaving much of the narrative to creative interpretation.
The Balkan Line, directed by Andrey Volgin, centers on a fictionalized account of a GRU-led mission to capture Slatina airfield before NATO forces could arrive. The plot follows a small detachment tasked with holding the strategic location against an Albanian battalion led by a warlord named Smuk. The film depicts a harrowing environment where the protagonists must navigate ethnic cleansing and illicit organ harvesting while attempting to rescue a local doctor, Jasna Blagojević.
The project originated in 2012 when actor Gosha Kutsenko discussed the concept with producer Vasil Shevts. Kutsenko eventually secured the support of Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, who served as a major in the GRU during the actual 1999 events. Because the specific details of Yevkurov's mission remain under a stamp of secrecy, the screenwriters relied on his general guidance for authenticity while crafting the fictionalized plot. This collaboration resulted in a production that involved extensive two-month physical and tactical training for the actors portraying the special forces team.
The film serves as a joint Russian–Serbian production, with actor Miloš Biković playing a pivotal role as both a performer and a producer. Biković, who opted to portray a Serbian police officer rather than a Russian soldier, helped coordinate filming locations across Serbia, Russia, and Crimea. The release occurred on March 21, 2019, timed just three days before the 20th anniversary of the real-world conflict. Despite the film's dramatic focus on the rescue of prisoners and the defense of the airfield, the true nature of the Russian military's secret operation in Kosovo continues to be shielded by official secrecy.
