Can love survive the chaos of war in a surreal Balkan landscape?
In short: In Emir Kusturica’s 2004 film Life Is a Miracle, a Serbian engineer finds his orderly life upended by the outbreak of conflict in Bosnia. As his family fractures and his son is captured, he forms an unlikely bond with a hostage, challenging the boundaries of loyalty and survival.
Set in 1992, the narrative follows Luka, an engineer who relocates from Belgrade to a remote station in Bosnia to manage a newly finished rail line. While Luka remains fixated on his professional duties and maintains a stubborn, optimistic outlook, the surrounding region descends into violence. His son, Miloš, sees his dreams of playing for the Partizan football club cut short by military conscription, and his wife, Jadranka, abandons the family during the upheaval.
The plot takes a turn when Luka, devastated by news of his son’s imprisonment, is offered a Bosnian Muslim woman named Sabaha as a hostage. Intending to use her as leverage for a prisoner exchange, Luka instead finds himself falling in love with her as they navigate the dangerous, Serb-controlled landscape. Their journey is marked by absurdity and peril, including a narrow escape at the Drina river where Sabaha is wounded by a sniper before being successfully traded for Miloš.
The film concludes with a reunion that leaves Luka profoundly lovesick, leading to a final, surreal sequence involving a train and a mule. Beyond its human drama, the production is notable for its whimsical tone and its recognition at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, where a canine performer in the film was honored with the Palm Dog award. It also earned a 2005 Golden Eagle Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, cementing its place as a unique, if unconventional, exploration of love amidst geopolitical tragedy.
