How a rejected script about a bodyguard became a global romantic phenomenon
In short: Lawrence Kasdan wrote The Bodyguard in 1975, but it took seventeen years and a casting overhaul to reach theaters. Initially envisioned for Steve McQueen and Diana Ross, the project languished in development hell until Kevin Costner championed Whitney Houston for her debut, ultimately creating a record-breaking, culture-shifting cinematic success.
Lawrence Kasdan, then an advertising copywriter, completed the script for The Bodyguard in 1975, inspired by the 1961 film Yojimbo. He envisioned a story about a bodyguard willing to sacrifice his life for a client he might personally dislike. Despite his enthusiasm, the script was passed over 67 times before Warner Bros. Pictures purchased it in 1977 for $20,000. Early attempts to produce the film stalled as potential stars like Steve McQueen and Diana Ross withdrew due to health issues, creative disagreements, and personal conflicts.
The project remained in development until 1985, when Kevin Costner discovered the script. Costner, who eventually produced the film alongside Kasdan, insisted on casting a professional singer rather than a traditional actress for the role of Rachel Marron. Despite executive concerns regarding Houston's lack of acting experience and potential racial backlash over the film's interracial romance, Costner remained firm. Houston, who had previously turned down smaller roles, accepted the part after Costner promised to support her through the process.
Filming took place between November 1991 and March 1992, with a $25 million budget. The production faced tragedy when a 33-year-old grip driver, William Vitagliano, died in a fatal accident on set in January 1992. Upon its release in November 1992, the film received mixed-to-negative reviews but became a massive commercial success, grossing $411 million worldwide. It is now recognized for breaking Hollywood barriers regarding interracial casting and for its soundtrack, which remains the best-selling of all time.
