In short: In the 2006 horror feature The Breed, a group of friends on a weekend getaway find themselves hunted by enhanced canines on a remote island. While the project boasted Wes Craven as an executive producer, it struggled to impress critics, eventually spawning a meta-sequel nearly two decades later.

The Breed marked the directorial entry of Nicholas Mastandrea, who had previously worked as a first assistant director on the 1994 production Wes Craven's New Nightmare. The film follows two brothers, Matt and John, who bring friends to an island cabin inherited from their late uncle. Their vacation turns into a fight for survival when they are besieged by dogs from a former military training facility, where the animals were subjected to genetic enhancement.

Production for the film commenced in April 2005 and concluded approximately two months later. To prepare for their roles, the cast underwent a week of specialized training with the dogs involved in the shoot. Despite the pedigree of its executive producer, the film received a 27% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics were largely unimpressed, with some reviewers describing the dialogue as juvenile and the overall experience as lacking genuine scares.

The narrative explores the consequences of the military's experiments, as the characters discover that bites from the enhanced dogs can induce feral behavior in humans. In a final act of desperation, the survivors attempt to escape the island by boat, only to find that the threat persists. In 2025, the franchise returned with a meta-sequel titled A Breed Apart, which follows a group of influencers visiting the original filming location. This later installment features actors such as Grace Caroline Currey, Virginia Gardner, and Hayden Panettiere, shifting the focus to a new generation encountering the island's lethal inhabitants.
