How a Loud House spin-off built a vibrant world in Great Lakes City
In short: When Ronnie Anne Santiago moved to the bustling Great Lakes City, she traded her familiar life for a sprawling, multi-generational household. This animated sitcom explores the chaotic, heartwarming dynamics of the Casagrande family, proving that even in a crowded urban environment, the strongest bonds are found right at home.
Developed by Michael Rubiner and Miguel Puga, The Casagrandes emerged as a spin-off from the popular franchise The Loud House. The series centers on Ronnie Anne, her brother Bobby, and their mother Maria as they integrate into the lives of their extended relatives. The household is a lively mix of personalities, including grandparents, an aunt and uncle, and four cousins, alongside their pets, Lalo and Sergio. Beyond their own walls, the family navigates life in the fictional Great Lakes City, where they encounter a diverse cast of neighbors and friends, such as Sid Chang.
The production journey began in 2018, with Nickelodeon officially green-lighting the project in July of that year. Following its premiere on October 14, 2019, the show quickly expanded, securing renewals for second and third seasons. Critics, including Joyce Slaton of Common Sense Media, praised the program for its charming depiction of a Mexican American family. While the series occasionally features light, infrequent cartoon violence and mild humor, it is widely regarded as an engaging and enjoyable watch for its audience.
Although Nickelodeon cancelled the television series in February 2022, the characters remained part of the broader franchise. The story reached a formal conclusion with the release of an animated feature film on Netflix on March 22, 2024. This cinematic finale served as a capstone to the show, directed by Miguel Puga and written by a collaborative team, ensuring that the adventures of the Casagrande family were given a proper send-off after their years on air.
