How a rural family's move to the city created a Disney Channel record
In short: When the Green family traded their Smalton farm for the urban sprawl of Big City, they didn't just find new neighbors. They sparked a decade-long phenomenon, establishing the longest-running animated series in the history of the Disney Channel.
The journey began in June 2018, when creators Chris and Shane Houghton introduced viewers to the Green family. Originally developed under the working title 'Country Club' in March 2016, the show follows Bill, Gramma Alice, and siblings Cricket and Tilly as they navigate life in a bustling, fictional metropolis. The family's transition from the countryside was prompted by the loss of their farm in the town of Smalton, leading them to settle near Alice's urban farm holdout.
The series is defined by its complex character dynamics and shifting landscapes. While the family initially struggled to adapt to the city, the narrative evolved significantly by the second half of season three, when Bill regained his farm and moved the family back to Smalton. By season four, the show's setting expanded to balance life between the two locations, with Nancy Green—Bill's ex-wife and a former biker—managing the rural farm while the children navigate urban adventures.
Beyond the family, the show features a vibrant supporting cast, including the wealthy but insecure Remy Remington and the ambitious Gloria Sato. The series has also faced significant conflict, most notably from the antagonist Chip Whistler, the manager of Wholesome Foods. Chip's long-running feud with the Greens involved elaborate plots, including an alias as 'Norm Alguy' and a heavy-handed attempt to frame the family for city-wide destruction, which eventually led to his arrest and a triple life sentence.
As of 2026, the show's legacy continues to grow. Following the conclusion of its fourth season in August 2025, a fifth season premiered on August 21, 2026. With a feature film, 'Spacecation,' having debuted in June 2024 and a spin-off series currently in development, the world created by the Houghton brothers remains a cornerstone of modern American animation.
