A 1986 prehistoric epic faced critical failure despite its ambitious production and unique vision.
In short: The Clan of the Cave Bear brought Paleolithic Europe to life with elaborate makeup and remote Canadian locations. Yet, despite a $16 million budget and an Oscar-nominated aesthetic, the film struggled to find an audience, becoming a notorious financial flop that remains a polarizing curiosity in cinema history.
Directed by Michael Chapman and based on Jean M. Auel’s novel, the film depicts Ayla, a Cro-Magnon girl adopted by a Neanderthal tribe. The production was marked by significant logistical challenges, including filming in extreme conditions across British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, and the Yukon. Actors endured temperatures as low as 5 °F while wearing minimal animal pelts, and the intricate Neanderthal makeup required 3.5 hours of application per session. The film featured professional animal actors, including an early role for Bart the Bear, supplemented by animatronics.
The project’s path to the screen was fraught with instability. Originally conceived as a television film, it transitioned into a feature-length production after producers considered adapting two books simultaneously. Universal Pictures eventually dropped the project before Warner Bros. picked it up. Despite the high production values and the involvement of acclaimed makeup artists like Michael Westmore and Michèle Burke, the film was a commercial disaster, earning only $1.9 million against a $15 million budget in the United States and Canada.
Critical reception was overwhelmingly negative, with the film currently holding a 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics often cited its heavy-handed narration and clichéd portrayals of Neanderthals versus Cro-Magnons. However, some retrospective analysis suggests the film’s poor reputation may be linked to its themes of feminism. While audiences polled by CinemaScore were more forgiving, awarding it a B-, the film’s legacy remains defined by its status as a financial failure and its nomination for a Best Makeup Oscar, which it ultimately lost to The Fly.
