A routine train ride turns into a deadly conspiracy for a former police officer
In short: When Michael MacCauley is laid off from his insurance job, a mysterious stranger on his daily commute offers him a life-changing sum of money for a simple task. He soon discovers the request is a trap, forcing him into a high-stakes battle to protect his family and innocent lives.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and released in 2018, The Commuter stars Liam Neeson as Michael MacCauley, a former NYPD officer turned insurance agent. The narrative unfolds on the Hudson Line train from Tarrytown to Grand Central Terminal. After being fired, MacCauley is approached by a woman named Joanna, who tasks him with identifying a passenger using the alias Prynne. She promises him $100,000 in total, starting with $25,000 hidden in the train's bathroom, to complete the assignment.
The situation rapidly escalates into a conspiracy involving corrupt police officers and a witness protection target. MacCauley eventually learns that Prynne is actually a 16-year-old girl named Sofia, who possesses incriminating evidence against powerful figures. The film explores themes of corporate and police corruption, as MacCauley must navigate a series of threats, including the murder of an FBI agent and the derailment of his train, to save Sofia and his own family.
The production of the film was a lengthy process, with various directors attached as early as 2010 before Collet-Serra signed on in 2016. It marked the fourth collaboration between the director and Neeson. Upon its theatrical release, the film grossed approximately $119.9 million worldwide. While critics offered mixed reviews, often comparing it to the duo's previous work, Non-Stop, audiences generally praised the suspenseful atmosphere and the performances of the cast, which included Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, and Sam Neill.
