A violent reality show experiment that failed to capture the public's imagination or budget
In short: In the 2007 action film The Condemned, ten death-row inmates are dropped on a remote island to fight to the death for a live-streamed audience. Produced by WWE Films, the project aimed for massive online viewership, but ultimately collapsed under the weight of critical disdain and poor box office returns.
Directed by Scott Wiper, The Condemned follows Jack Conrad, a former Delta Force operative awaiting execution in a Salvadoran prison. He is recruited by a rogue producer, Ian Breckel, for an illegal, high-stakes game broadcast over the internet. The contestants are fitted with explosive ankle devices featuring 30-hour timers, tracking capabilities, and a 10-second detonation delay. The winner is promised freedom and a cash prize, provided they survive the brutal gauntlet of their peers.
The film's production was ambitious, with Breckel aiming for ratings that would rival the Super Bowl’s 40 million viewers. However, the execution was widely panned. Critics frequently compared the narrative to The Most Dangerous Game and Battle Royale, citing plot holes, hypocrisy, and excessive violence. By April 2020, the film held a 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 23 out of 100 score on Metacritic. Audiences polled by CinemaScore were similarly unimpressed, awarding it a C+ grade.
Financially, the film was a significant disappointment. Produced on a $20 million budget, it grossed only $8.6 million globally. Its theatrical run lasted just four weeks, ending with a domestic total of approximately $7.37 million. Despite the cinematic failure, the home media market proved more lucrative; the DVD and Blu-ray release, which arrived in September 2007, sold roughly 1.185 million units and generated $22.7 million in revenue. The franchise saw a modest continuation in 2015 with the release of a sequel, The Condemned 2, starring Randy Orton.
